Awareness-raising activities mark the celebration of the International Day of Forests in Coimbatore

Various activities marked the celebration of the International Day of Forests in Coimbatore on Monday.

The Coimbatore Forestry Division held an awareness rally on Monday which was reported by S. Ramasubramanian, Forest Conservator and Field Manager of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), in the presence of the District Forest Officer of Coimbatore TK Ashok Kumar and retired DFO C. Badrasami. Forest Department staff who have demonstrated excellence in service were commended at the event. A photography exhibition on ‘Birds and Butterflies of Siruvani’ was held in the parking lot of Kovai Courtallam on 19-20 March. Coimbatore Nature Society and The Nature and Butterfly Society were the event partners. Savithri Photo House, Coimbatore supported the event by printing photos for the exhibition.

The ATR administration organized an outreach event for tourists in Aliyar on Monday in coordination with the students of the Municipal Higher Secondary School for Girls, Kottur Road, Pollachi. The students educated tourists about the dangers of throwing plastic, feeding and disturbing wild animals. Members of the Top Slip tribal communities have organized cultural events aimed at raising awareness about forest protection. The students were taken to Kavi Aruvi Falls, Aliyar Butterfly Park and the Orchidarium at the Attakatti Advanced Wildlife Management Training Center.

The ENVIS Resource Partner on Forest Genetic Resources and Tree Improvement at the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement (IFGTB), Coimbatore, on Monday organized a digital awareness campaign via Facebook live. IFGTB Director C. Kunhikannan inaugurated the program A mobile photography contest on the current year’s theme “Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption” was held from March 1 to 18 and the winners were congratulated .

Kannan CS Warrier, Senior Principal Scientist and ENVIS Coordinator at IFGTB, has received an invitation to present a ‘Music from Wood’ program as part of the United Nations International Day of Forests 2022 celebrations for the food and agriculture. Mr. Warrier, along with his son Amruth K. Warrier, performed a “Layavinyasam” on mridangam and online tabla at the event in Bangkok, a statement said.
